Have you ever read your toothpaste tube? Kind of like a horror novel. If you SWALLOW this product while swishing it around in your mouth you are advised to call Poison Control! I am guessing minute amounts are acceptable but we can’t KNOW that. There are also questions about the safety of Fluoride and other common additives.
That said, have you ever walked the toothpaste aisle in your local big box store? Looking for a healthy alternative to these pastes? You will be shocked at the lack of all natural, earth friendly, additive free toothpastes and tooth powders.
Healing Leaf LLC, out of a desire to eliminate the additives in commercial toothpastes, decided to formulate a product that would not only not require Poison Control assistance but would actually be good for us. We created Ugly to White®
, an all natural blend of Himalayan salt, baking powder, sage, xylitol and essential oils. It does not taste like bubble gum. But it is safe and it whitens teeth in a safe and natural way.
Why Xylitol?
Xylitol is best known for its ability to fight cavities. Xylitol consumption has been repeatedly shown to reduce cavities in peer reviewed scientific journals. Moreover, the same studies indicate that Xylitol consumption results in the re-mineralization, or strengthening, of tooth enamel. For example, chewing Xylitol gum has been shown to be as effective as teeth sealants in preventing cavities. This anti-cavity effect is due to Xylitol’s anti-bacterial characteristics.
Bone Health
Xylitol has been shown to increase calcium absorption in the body. Additionally, consumption has been linked to bone re-mineralization, or bone strengthening.
Studies indicate that Xylitol consumption increases skin thickness and collagen content in animals. Skin lotions that contain Xylitol, have been shown to reduce bacteria and increase dermal hydration.
Metabolism/Diabetes Management
There are fourteen million diabetics in the US alone. These individuals are sensitive to high glycemic foods. The body derives energy from Xylitol in two ways. Both metabolic pathways are independent of the glucose-insulin route that causes glycemic stress. Xylitol has a very low glycemic index of 7 and is safe for consumption by diabetics. Several studies have shown that Xylitol ingestion results in no increase in blood glucose levels. Similar studies have shown that long term Xylitol consumption by diabetics is an excellent way to control blood glucose levels. Xylitol has a calorie content of 2.4 calories per gram compared to 4 calories per grams in sugar.
An All Natural Sugar
Xylitol is an all-natural sweetener found in many fruits and vegetables, including raspberries and plums. It tastes and looks like sugar. Because it is all-natural, it differs substantially from artificially created chemical sweeteners like Splenda®, and aspartame. It is safe for people of all ages.
Protects Teeth
In the fight against cavities, dentists recommend Xylitol. Numerous studies show that Xylitol reduces the amount of cavity-causing bacteria in the mouth. As little as 6 grams a day can dramatically reduce the risk for tooth decay.
Other Healthy Benefits
Studies have also shown that xylitol can also help reduce ear infections. Because of these and other health benefits, many consider Xylitol a healthy alternative to sugar.
Ugly to White® does not taste like the toothpastes you have used before. It is a tooth powder and works best when you dip your DRY brush into the powder. The Xylitol gives it a sweet cool taste that is counter balanced by the Himalayan salt. Break free of the fluoride and additive laced products and be truly kind to your mouth and teeth.
